So, fuck Assembla!

By pedroduarte0

I received today this email from Assembla:

We’re sending you this important message because you own one or more free private spaces on Assembla.com. We no longer support free private spaces. As a space owner you should go to our upgrade page and select an option:

  1. You can choose an inexpensive paid subscription with the Private/Professional plan
  2. You can change your public permissions to “View” and fit the Free Public plan
Please make your selection now from our upgrade page.

We hope you have already had a chance to experience the many upgrades and additions in our latest Assembla 2.0 release. By making your decision now, you help us continue increasing the quality of the Assembla service. If you do not choose one of these options, we will keep your space in Private status, but we will set your space to read-only, and you will be able to get your private information later.

If you already responded to this request: Thank you!

For more information about this change, and to give us feedback, read all about the new release on the Assembla Blog.

Student project? Assembla will still support private volunteer student projects. Please follow these instructions to continue with a free sponsored space for your student project.

Anyway, the public repo I maintain will not be affected.

And Andy, the main guy who runs that place isn’t winning many friends either with how he’s handling the changes.

Not to blow my own horn – you could look at xp-dev.com as an alternative. It’s free Subversion hosting (1.5GB at the mo) and has project/issue tracking as well.

More than ever, I see free services as suspects, except for big companies like Google and Yahoo who have the money to offer free service and still get some income due advertising… And that’s clear to us, users, since the beginning – that I find fair. What I find bad on Assembla is the fact they didn’t told us before about their plans…
